1,800 Tamils released in Sri Lanka
About 1,800 Tamils out of the 2,184 detained in recent days following the twin bombings that rocked the Sri Lankan capital last week have been released, the Parliament was informed on Tuesday.
Replying to queries from Tamil MPs, Chief Government Whip Jeyaraj Fernandopulle said 1,800 Tamils have been released and the rest would also be freed after questioning.
Meanwhile, Disaster Management and Human Rights Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe said the government has decided to set up a Help Desk to provide information to the public about persons arrested or detained by police and security forces in the recent crackdown on suspected persons in Colombo and suburbs.
