Tunukkai, Uyilankulam & South of Akkarayankulam Tank Fall under Valiant Troops after 25 Years
THE MUCH-TALKED TERRORIST stronghold, TUNUKKAI, about 20 km west of MANKULAM, one more central connecting village, UYILANKULAM, and also the southern edge of the AKKARAYANKULAM tank, about 12 km to the southwest of KILINOCHCHI town centre were finally brought under government troops as dawn fell on Friday (22) bringing a humiliating defeat for the terror outfit that has been ranked as the most ruthless, the Army Headquarters announced.
This is the first time in the history of the so-called “Eelam War” Sri Lankan troops dominated these areas striking a major blow to the LTTE terrorist outfit which has murdered thousands of innocent civilians, politicians, democrats, intellectuals, statesmen, members of the Armed Forces and the Police.
Agriculturally-rich TUNUKKAI, one of the nerve centres of Tiger outfit was serving as a major administrative hub responsible for coordination of all Sea Tiger attacks, deployment of LTTE terrorists, distribution of armaments, planning of clandestine operations, abduction and evacuation of civilians from different venues, etc for the past few years. This terrorist stronghold became busily operational after the recent fall of notoriously famous Sea Tiger base, VIDATTALTTIVU which was earlier regarded as a “no-entry zone” by Tigers.
UYILANKULAM, another farming village that lies between the southern edge of the AKKARAYANKULAM tank was also dominated by Tigers. It functioned as a secret transit location for their operations, since it is situated quite close to their administrative financial hub, KILINOCHCHI and other important locations.

Air Force destroy 3 LTTE nerve centers in Wanni
Sri Lanka Air Force carried out 3 historic air missions targeting 3 of the LTTE's most vital nerve centers in the Wanni during last few hours, said the defence sources.
According to Air Force spokesperson , Wing Commander Janaka Nanayakkara, the first of the triple air raids was carried out last midnight targeting the LTTE's Sea Tiger forward operating base at Nagasivanthurai in Poonaryn.
"LTTE occupations near Nagasivanthurai Jetty , a Radar point and a boatyard was destroyed in this mission carried out by MI 24 helicopters", he said. Speaking further the said that the target was operated as a forward reconnaissance centre by the LTTE.
The defence intelligence sources said that the targeted location has gained highest strategic importance in LTTE's military plans of late, aimed at avoiding the impending military defeat.
The second air raid was conducted by fighter jets at 9.55 AM targeting the main operation centre of the LTTE's intelligence wing located at Iranapalai, North of Puthukkudiyiruppu, in the Mullaittiuvu district. According to the defence intelligence sources, the target was one of the most secured terror base with the highest strategic importance to the LTTE.

Arrested LTTE man came for recruitment
Thambi Anna alias Thambi Ilamkathir alias Daniel (46), a key Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) procurement agent who was picked up in Chennai by the Q Branch police on Wednesday, had come to recruit more suppliers for his network, police said on Thursday.
According to police sources, Thambi Anna was a close associate of Soosai, the head of 'Sea Tigers' , the LTTE's naval arm and a top ranking guerrilla leader. "Thambi Anna was appointed chief of a procurement module in 2006 by Soosai. He has been coordinating all major smuggling operations between Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka since then," a senior police official said.
Significantly, Thambi had so far managed to run the show for the LTTE without ever visiting Tamil Nadu. He was arrested on what is believed to be his first visit to the state. He made the trip he was desperate to keep the supply lines alive in the wake of a crackdown by the state police and interdiction at sea by the island's navy, the official said.
"We are intercepting their consignments almost every day. This has significantly reduced the LTTE's supplies. As they can't afford to let this situation continue, there may have been pressure on him to boost the supply mechanism ," another official said.

Tigers shift smuggling base from TN to Kerala
Tamil Nadu Police Chief K. P. Jain was quoted by the Indian Express (IE) yesterday as having said that the LTTE had shifted its smuggling base from Tamil Nadu to Kerala due to strict vigilance along the Tamil Nadu coast and continuous monitoring of LTTE sympathisers in the State.
Jain, the IE said, had pointed to the arrest of a sea tiger, Daniel alias Tambianna of Kilinochchi, who had used Kochi and Tiruvananthapuram coast for building their boats.

Three LTTE craft destroyed off Chilavaththa, Mullaithivu
In a pre-emptive attack launched by the fast attack craft, fast missile vessels and Special boat squadron of the Navy to a cluster of about 10 LTTE craft launched from Vhilawaththa situated two nautical miles to the south from Mullaithivu in order to attack naval craft, three LTTE attack type craft were completely destroyed today (24th July) around 0630 p.m.
The cluster of LTTE attack type craft had been launched and was being maneuvered in the shallow waters when sighted the preparedness of theirs to attack navy.
However, amongst attack by the naval units the other craft fled after three craft were completely destroyed.

Navy-Air Force combined Attack destroys 06 LTTE Boats and damages Two off Nachchikuda
The combined attack launched by the Sri Lanka Navy and the Sri Lanka Air Force, destroyed six (06) LTTE boats and completely damaged another two in a sea confrontation that lasted for over two hours in the seas off Nachchikuda, located on the North-western coast, today (20th July 2008).
Naval craft on patrol had engaged the enemy craft upon observing a movement of a flotilla of 6-8 LTTE boats south of Nachchikuda around 1630 hrs. The Air Force air support was subsequently called for and the LTTE boat movement was completely immobilized in the combined naval and air attack that ensued. The monitoring of enemy communication has confirmed that more than 15 LTTE cadres have been killed in the confrontation.
Naval troops suffered no casualties and none of their craft received any damages in the sea confrontation.

Illuppakadavai captured
Troops from the 58 Division (Task Force 1), spearheaded by Commandos today reached the Sea Tiger camp at Illuppakadavai. A heavy firefight ensued today for nearly two hours. Tigers received a severe beating and survivors took tail. Exact number of casualties is unavailable.
The next targets lying in the 58s path are Vellankulam (7km), Nochchikudah (7km), Pallikuda and Pooneryn (20kms). The objective will be the latter, while the three former locations also have some significant sea Tiger Activity.
As Vellankulam ends, the Kilinochchi District begins. Thevampiddi Church to where the Our Lady of Madhu statue was removed to is also situated in Vellankulam. Thevampiddi is a small coastal village on the A-32. The 58 advance towards Vellankulam will happen simultaneously to the 57 advance towards Tunukkai and Mallavi on the eastern flank.
Sea Tigers have been at the receiving end lately, with cadres being killed and assets destroyed on a regular basis. The latest and most serious damage comes from an attack on the Sea Tiger base at Chalai in the Northeastern Coast.

Sri Lanka's armed forces eye Kilinochchi
Government defence spokesperson Minister Keheliya Rambukwella today revealed that the armed forces have already taken steps to liberate Kilinochchi from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) as their next aim.
He pointed out that the security forces’ “liberation” of the Vidataltivu Sea Tiger base, where Sea Tiger leader Soosai had once operated, was a “great victory”. He made these comments at a press briefing held at his residence.
He went on to say that following the capture of the Vidataltivu area, troops consolidated their domination over 90% of the Mannar district. The government expects to cultivate paddy in the Rice Bowl area in Mannar in the future, he added.
Responding to a question asked by a media person on abductions carried out by “white vans”, the Minister said that the only way to resolve this issue is to stop importing “white vans from Japan since 90% of the vans imported to Sri Lanka are white-coloured.”
He added that there was evidence now surfacing that the majority of these cases are fabrications aimed at troubling the government.

Vidattaltivu Liberated; terrorists suffer fatal blow
Gallant soldiers of Army 58 Division and Commando Brigade have liberated the strategically important Vidattaltivu town this morning (July 16), said the defence sources in the Mannar warfront.
According to defence sources, Vidattaltivu is the biggest town situated on the North- Western coast of the Island, 20 km North of Mannar and is the main Sea-Tiger base cum the logistic hub of the LTTE in the West. This is the first time after the departure of Indian Peace Keeping Force in 1987 that troops have dominated the area , the sources added.
Defence observers are in the view that the lost of Vidattaltivu would cast a fatal blow on LTTE as it has lost the most important Sea-Tiger base in the present context. According to them the terrorists have no other option than to shift their Sea-Tiger assets to a makeshift camp further Northwards with the lost of its well-established sea borne operation base.

The troops continued the military thrust on the Sea Tiger base surrounding it from the south and west directions and cutting off all supply routes leading to Vidathalthivu, ground sources told the Daily News last night.
“The LTTE had vacated some locations in Vidathalthivu by last evening as they felt the area was being surrounded by the troops,” Army Commander Lt. General Sarath Fonseka told the Daily News.
The Army Commander was confident that the entire Sea Tiger base would fall to the troops by Wednesday afternoon.

Wanni liberation enters decisive phase
The Security Forces engaged in the Wanni liberation operation, entered a decisive phase yesterday as the troops created the biggest ever military front to the LTTE in the western flank of Wanni with two Army divisions that independently operated in Mannar and Vavuniya linking together from southeast of Periyamadu yesterday afternoon.
With the successful completion of the liberation of the Mannar ‘Rice Bowl’ the troops attached to the 58 Division in Mannar made this strategic move, moving further towards North East of Mannar to link with the 57 Division troops operating South of Periyamadu.
“With the linkage of the two Divisions, infantry battalions engaged in the Wanni liberation operation created a 75 km long massive military front from the West of A-9 road in the Western flank of Wanni front,” a senior military official told the Daily News.
The troops attached to 57 and 58 Divisions have liberated 1,084 square kilometres in Vavuniya, Mannar and Mullaitivu districts.
“With this move the Security Forces operating in the Mannar sector are now positioned some two and half kilometres South of Vedithalthivu,” General Officer Commanding of the 58 Division Brigadier Shavendra Silva told the Daily News.
With this move by the Security Forces LTTE cadres operating in the Vedithalthivu Sea Tiger Base have started to vacate the area as they have been convinced that they cannot hold that ground further, intelligence reports indicated yesterday.
Vedithalthivu is strongest Sea Tiger Base of the LTTE in the North Western coast of the country. The LTTE depends on it for their logistic support to the North and Wanni battle fronts.

Now, ANDANKULAM Town in Army Hands
Giving a further severe blow to the terrorists fighting for division of the country, triumphant troops of the Army wrested the complete control of the ANDANKULAM town area of about 4 sq km on UIYLANKULAM-NEDUNKANDAL Road, about 2 km north of KARUNKANDAL, MANNAR Friday (27) evening, just two hours before this report was compiled.
Friday evening’s (27) fall of ANDANKULAM town into the hands of brave soldiers came less than six hours after troops dominated CHIRADDIKULAM area (LTTE 54-Base) in MULLATTIVU district decimating scores of terrorists amidst heavy fighting that continued since Thursday (26) evening. The fight for supremacy in ANDANKULAM town area resulted in the death of about 11 Tiger terrorists. Three valiant soldiers sustained injuries and were admitted to hospital. It is believed at least another dozen of terrorists were injured and taken away by pockets of fleeing terrorists further towards the north. Troops have so far recovered one dead body of a terrorist as the dusk fell after the bout of fighting.
ANDANKULAM, predominately a Tamil town with several state and commercial institutes, since of late has been widely utilized by Tiger terrorists as a cross-point for distribution of terrorist logistics and illegal weapons towards VIDDATHALATHIVU, a notorious Sea Tiger base, from where many smuggling rings and seaborne attacks are launched.

MUHAMALAI: Meanwhile around 1.35pm in SORANPATTU area 10km south of the MUHAMALAI Forward Defence Line another LTTE Artillery Point was engaged by AirForce fighter jets.

Army and Navy troops deployed at the Chiraththivu islet, Jaffna sprung an ambush killing at least 15 terrorists as troops claimed to have thwarted a pre-dawn LTTE infiltration attempt at the combined military detachment located between the Jaffna mainland and the Mandathivu island today (May 29).
One soldier was killed while another 2 suffered injuries in this incident. Two navy sailors and an army soldier reported missing in action, military sources added.
Later troops also have reportedly repulsed a second wave of offensive launched by LTTE in six boats towards the islet from non-liberated Ponneryn area, as sources said 3 LTTE boats destroyed and another heavily damaged and sunk in the shallow waters at around 2a.m. Troops have also mounted heavy artillery attacks towards the fleeing terrorists as enemy fatalities were expected to soar, military source said.
Chiraththivu is a small islet located in close proximity of the Jaffna- Mandathivu causeway.
Security Forces are now engaged in search operations in the area, while a military official said that efforts are been made to recover another LTTE boat partially sunk in the shallow waters off the Chiraththivu islet.

Tamil leader frustrated with fundraising
Federal officials released more documents yesterday that were seized during a massive RCMP investigation into Tamil Tigers fundraising in Canada, including a guerrilla leader's request for "a huge sum" of money.
The police files, unsealed by the Federal Court, are the latest evidence that Sri Lanka's Tamil Tigers rebels have been bankrolling their civil war with money raised by supporters in Canada. But the newly disclosed documents also suggest the Tamil Tigers may not be getting as much from Canada as they would like: In one communique, a senior rebel boss complained that Canadians were not doing enough to support the fight.
Colonel Soosai, who commands the rebel navy wing known as the Sea Tigers, told three Canadian Tamil activists he was frustrated about the "insufficient activities of the branches in Canada and England," according to a 12-page report. He said he was "expecting a huge sum" of money and that Tamil activists should "act accordingly," says the document, written by the Tamil Tigers International Coordination Centre but seized by RCMP counter-terrorism officers in Toronto. The document is an account of a meeting that took place in a rebel-held region of northern Sri Lanka in 2004. Several senior guerrillas addressed the visiting delegation, including Col. Soosai, who complained that "most of the promises" made by foreign supporters "ended up as fictions."

Tigers' deep sea mines pose new threat to Sri Lanka
The Tamil Tigers' deep sea underwater capability demonstrated off the eastern Sri Lankan coast Saturday might have added a new dimension to the military conflict, The Sunday Times said.
The navy could be facing a new challenge in the coming months if the Tamil guerrillas continue to attack Sri Lankan vessels with sea mines or human torpedoes, the weekly paper said.
A sea mine sunk a Sri Lankan naval Fast Attack Craft (FAC) off Nayaru on the Mullaitivu coast at about 2.25 a.m. Saturday. And although six men were rescued in the vicinity, the fate of 10 others was not known, it added.
Survivors said that they saw no Tiger vessel in the vicinity either with the naked eye or electronically and that there was no confrontation or firing. Hence the suspicion about a sea mine being the cause of the deadly explosion.
The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), however, gave a different version of the incident. The LTTE said there was a confrontation between the Sri Lankan Navy and a suicide squad of the Sea Tigers in which 14 navy men were killed and one FAC was sunk.
The LTTE further said that three Tigers, including a 'Lt. Colonel' and two women cadres, all members of the Black Tiger suicide squad, were killed. The names of the dead were announced.

Sea Tiger Coordinating Centre Destroyed
AFTER PROLONGED SURVEILLANCE, Sri Lanka Air Force fighter craft shelled an LTTE base northwest of PUDUKUDIRIPPU, MULLAITHIVU Saturday (22) at about 2.10 p.m.
Intelligence reports revealed the target was a coordinating centre of Sea Tigers.Pilots confirmed the Sea Tiger base was destroyed in the air attack.
