LTTE violates its own ceasefire; launches artillery attacks at Jaffna FDL

Military reports received form Muhamalai Forward Defence (FDL) indicate that LTTE terrorist have launched artillery attack at troops manning the area this morning (July 29).

Military spokesperson Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said that the terrorist have fired about 10 rounds of heavy artillery at troops between 6 to 6.30AM . Two soldiers have sustained injuries due to the attack, he further said. He added that terrorist have used their guns located in the Poonaryn area for the attack.

LTTE recently announced through its media network that it would maintain a unilateral ceasefire since July 27 in view of the SAARC summit which is currently being held in Sri Lanka. However , observers of LTTE activities raised doubts about LTTE's intentions over this sudden decision. The government maintained that it would only go for a ceasefire when the LTEE have laid down their arms. According to observers, the latest attack has substantiated their doubts about the integrity of the LTTE.

Massive air strikes on LTTE positions

The Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) has attacked more than 4 LTTE positions in the north during yesterday (25th) and today (26th).

The first air attack of yesterday was on a LTTE bunker line around 2km ahead of the Weli Oya forward defence line. Air Force used helicopter gunships to attack the target in this instance. Around half an hour later, SLAF bombers attacked 3 LTTE artillery positions south of Muhamalai FDL. Intelligence sources indicated that an LTTE artillery expert identified as "Iniyawan" has suffered injuries in this air raid.

Two more aerial attacks on LTTE positions in the northern front was launched today (26th) morning. Helicopter gunships attacked a small LTTE based located North of Andankulam at around 6am while bombers raided an LTTE training facility north of Vedithalaithivu. LTTE casualty details are not available as of this moment.

Air strikes on LTTE line of bunkers and 3 LTTE artillery locations

WELIOYA: Air Force MI24 helicopters carried out air strikes on LTTE line of bunkers 3km north of MITHUKAIKULAM tank ahead in FDL today(25) around 1.15pm. These air strikes were made to support the ground troops in WELIOYA FDL. Air Force confirms that the air strikes were carried out effectively.

JAFFNA: Meantime today (25) around 1.45pm Air Force fighter jets bombed 3 LTTE artillery locations, 3km south of MUHAMALAI FDL. These air strikes too were made to support the ground troops in JAFFNA FDL. Air force confirms that the air strikes were carried out effectively.

Sri Lanka steps up air raids on LTTE strongholds

Stepping up air raids on Tamil Tiger bases, Sri Lankan Russian-built MiG-27 jets bombed a suspected rebel position in the northwestern Mannar district early Thursday, the military said. “MiG-27 fighter jets raided an LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) stronghold during a close air support mission launched to assist advancing ground troops in Mannar,” the defence ministry said in a statement.

It said the LTTE stronghold, located three kilometres south-west of the Periyamadu Tank in Mannar, was bombed around 8.20 am. The government gave no further details.

This is the fourth air raid in two days to assist the ground troops, which have opened many fronts in the regions of Wanni, Mannar and Welioya to move into the rebel-held territories amid tough resistance.

On Wednesday, the air force claimed that they bombed two artillery gun positions and a Sea Tiger base in the northern province.

It said the artillery gun positions of the LTTE were bombed Wednesday afternoon - one at Kalmunai in Pooneryn area 10 km south of the Muhamalai Forward Defence Lines (FDLs) and another at Soranpattu, a Sea Tiger base close to Nayaaru lagoon in Mullaitivu district.

Air Strikes On Two LTTE Artillery Points and One Sea Tiger Base

Today (04) Air Force fighter jets pounded three areas occupied by the LTTE terrorists.

KILINOCHCHI: Today around 1.30pm in KALMUNEI point Air-Force fighter jets carried out air strikes on a LTTE Artillery Point.

MUHAMALAI: Meanwhile around 1.35pm in SORANPATTU area 10km south of the MUHAMALAI Forward Defence Line another LTTE Artillery Point was engaged by AirForce fighter jets.

MULATHEIV: Another air-strike was carried out in a Sea Tiger Base located 1km southeast of NAYARU lagoon today (04) around 11.40 a.m.

Air Force pilots confirmed that the air strike was a total success.

Heavy Fighting Erupts in Muhamale

FIERCE ROUNDS of gun-battles that ensued in and around the Forward Defence Line (FDL) in MUHAMALE this morning (5) around 9.45 a.m. after Tiger terrorists fired artillery and mortars brought about losses to the terrorists.

Troops mobilized heavy guns in response and repulsed the attack killing at least ten Tiger terrorists including two of their leaders. Reports said at least fifty more terrorists were injured in the retaliation, carried out by the troops.

Troops recovered one terrorist dead body during the subsequent search.

Two soldiers sacrificed their lives and fourteen others received injuries in the LTTE fire. One soldier in the meantime had gone missing.

Heavy casualties in Muhamalai battle

Both the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) have suffered heavy casualties in the fighting that raged along Muhamalai and Kilali defence lines since yesterday (23rd) dawn.

Nearly 120 SLA soldiers have either been killed or gone missing in the operation that lasted for 10 hours. 370 soldiers are reported to be wounded. Around 250 of the wounded are in P1 (Seriously wounded) and P2 (Less seriously wounded) categories. In addition to these casualties, 4 main battle tanks (excluding the T-55 that was lost on the 22nd) of the army have also sustained damage. LTTE casualties stand at 52 killed and an unknown number injured.

SLA soldiers who valiantly battled it out on a terrain which the enemy had the advantage, even managed to storm the first LTTE defence line on two fronts. The LTTE, employing a similar tactic it used back in 2006, withdrew to secondary lines and brought a large volume of artillery fire on the troops consolidating newly captured positions. It was this rain of artillery shells that caused most of SLA casualties.

LTTE offensive attempt thrashed: 52 LTTE killed, many injured - Jaffna

Jaffna theatre of battle heated up since early this morning (April 23), as Sri Lanka army 55 and 53 divisions put- on stiff resistance to an LTTE embarked fresh offensives at the Army forwards defences on the Muhamalai and Kilaly frontiers. According to the defence sources in Jaffna heavy fighting broke out between troops and LTTE since 2 am this morning, as troops mounted retaliatory attacks at the offensive LTTE formations.

According to latest information LTTE suffered severe beating and were pushed some 500m back from its initial positions. Seizing the opportunity SLA broke the LTTE's first line of defence in the Muhamalai front, and are now engaged in consolidating the defence lines, security sources said.

So far, 15 soldiers have laid their lives while 74 suffered injuries and some of them have been air lifted to Colombo national hospital. Meanwhile, monitored radio communications and ground sources have confirmed that 52 LTTE terrorists have been killed and many injured in the latest skirmishes in Jaffna, Military Spokesperson Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said.

Sri Lankan military battle tank destroyed in north: LTTE

The Tamil Tiger rebels Tuesday claimed to have destroyed a main battle tank of the Sri Lankan Army during a clash with advancing government troops close to their forward defences in the northern Jaffna peninsula.

'A Sri Lankan Army tank was fully destroyed at Muhamalai Forward Defence Line (FDL) Tuesday morning around 7.30 a.m. when Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam's (LTTE) anti-tank unit confronted the army soldiers who attempted to break the Tiger FDL,' pro-LTTE Tamilnet website reported, quoting LTTE sources.

'The Sri Lankan Army has sustained heavy casualties in Muhamalai,' the Tigers said, giving no details of their own casualty figures.

The LTTE's fresh claim comes in the wake of escalating clashes between the advancing government troops and the fighting formations of the LTTE in the northern Wanni, Jaffna and northwestern Mannar region, leaving thousands of combatants killed and wounded over the past year.

Military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara, however, denied the latest claims by the rebels and said that 'the military have never used battle tanks in these areas'.

SLAF destroys black tiger base - Mankulam

Sri Lanka, Air Force supersonic fighter jets bombed at LTTE black tiger base located at Northwest of Mankulam this morning, (7 April).

Air force spokes person wing commander Andi Wijesoriya speaking to defence.lk said that their sorties were launched around 6.15 a.m. based on the information gathered through air surveillances and ground intelligence sources. The pilots confirm that the target was achieved accurately, he added.

Meanwhile, MI 24 helicopter gunships conducted air attack targeting LTTE bunker defences at south of Muhamalai in Jaffna around 6.30 a.m. today, (7 April).

The air attack were launched to assist ground troops who engaged in limited offensive operations in the area and to disrupt the LTTE formations, Air Force spokesperson further added.

Damages to the LTTE yet to be known.

Thirty LTTE bunkers destroyed,12 terrorists killed

Thirty LTTE bunkers were completely destroyed this morning (06). When Army troops launched an attack between 5.50 a.m. and 6.30 a.m.

Four LTTE bunkers in NAGARKOVIL ten in the North of A - 9 route, and 16 in KILALI were destroyed.

Troops used T 55 tanks in the NAGARKOVIL attack. Twelve terrorists were killed and a large number were injured in the encounter. Five soldiers were injured.

During Search operations, troops recovered a MPMG weapon, T 56 Weapon, 5 Magazines and some military equipments.

Major landmark in fight against terrorism achieved; Muhamale & Nagarkovil Tiger Defences Fall

53 LTTE terrorists killed and over 50 terrorist injured in confrontations

The Mannar - Vavuniya - Muahamalai area has been an area of increased activity in the past twenty four hours when compared with other operational areas as Trincomalee , Batticaloa , and Weli- Oya areas. In Weli-oya two terrorists were killed in a confrontation at Kokkuthuduwai at noon yesterday.

Meanwhile in Kalmadu, Batticaloa a former LTTE member identified a Thambimuttu Nadaraja was hacked to death by the LTTE . This penalty to the victim is not only as a reprisal for desertion but also as a grim and brutal reminder to warn other members of the organization of the consequences of deserting their organization . As a former foreign terrorist stated :" there is no entry fee for enlistment into a terrorist organization, but the only exit is through the cemetery".

A total of Twenty three LTTE terrorists have been killed in confrontation in the area of Adamapan South of Mannar and 57 terrorist have been injured according to LTTE communication intercepts during confrontations with troops. Three soldiers were reported killed in action while twenty sustained injuries. Many LTTE bunkers were also reported to have been destroyed in the attacks. Two soldiers were also reported killed when the terrorists launched a mortar attack on troops in the Adampan area of Murunkan and Thiruketheeswaran area, Mannar on Saturday (01) around 4.45 pm

LTTE suffers heavy beating; Troops neutralize offensive advance- Muhamalai

At least 52 LTTE terrorists were killed while scores of terrorist casualties were on the rise following counter attacks from troops at an LTTE offensive advance at Muhamalai this morning, security sources said.

Troops effectively neutralized the LTTE offensive taking over few LTTE bunkers inflicting heavy losses to the outfit, retaliating the terrorist offensive today(07) at 5.30a.m. Scattered LTTE elements were pushed backed assisted with long range artillery barrages, ground sources said. Security forces had full control over the LTTE bunkers till 7.a.m and later consolidated positions along the defences, the sources said.

Eleven soldiers sacrificed their lives and another fourty-one sustained injuries in defending the Muhamalai forward defences, MCNS said. LTTE vehicles were observed ahead of the defences rushing with heaps of slain terrorists and casualties, ground sources confirm.
