Q: Analysts see the May Eastern victory as a triumph of war strategy and political consolidation. Is there a danger of you and Gotabhaya exercising more power in this scenario?

First you need to see that the East was not a favourable province for the PA. The President lost the East badly at the Presidential election. We lost over 168,000 votes. In this campaign the UNP used three SLMC leaders and a prominent Sinhala politician to defeat the govt. Then the TNA made a public appeal for the people to vote against us; then the LTTE created tension to dissuade voters. Even the JVP contested separately. All we had was the faith that we had genuinely done work to develop the East. We had that confidence when we went before the people.

But on strengthening myself and Gotabhaya I need to deny that belief because I haven’t even gone to the East after the elections. I used to visit there at least once a week before but now the people have spoken and there is an elected people’s representative there who can handle the development; we don’t need to get involved there. My involvement in the East is less now. Even in the military side more and more power is coming to the Provincial Councils. The military presence is much less there. Those days the centre had more power because we worked through the governor, but now there are ministers and the CM so our involvement is negligible. Politically, we have power because our presence is strengthened after the elections in the East.

Q: Although you say your involvement is minimal, there must be much left undone in the East?

There is a lot to be done. We have resettled at least 90% of the displaced. Our target is to leave none unsettled by end December. On livelihoods too we are progressing with the help of donor agencies. The infrastructure development too is continuing according to plan. The East must be having the largest number of bridges in the entire country as planned. Water, fisheries harbour and roads will take priority. Even the World Bank has cited the East as a priority in the recently pledged funds. Reconstruction of the irrigation canals is also underway. The Trincomalee industrial estate is already underway.

Take LTTE to Task Now, Anandasangaree Urges International Community

V. Anandasangaree,President of the President TULF strongly condemned the bomb attack on innocent civilians in Colombo by the terrorist LTTE. He called upon international community to take the ruthless terrorists to task for this barbaric act. Hhe pointed out that that within two days of the assassination of Ms. Maheswary Velauthan of the EPDP, the LTTE has once again shown its atrocious feat in the heart of Colombo.

As usual Prabaharan has selected an innocent family to provide a suicide bomber for the game he plays off and on and thoroughly enjoys the killings of the innocents. He added, once again it is somebody else’s brainwashed child had sacrificed himself without any known protest neither from the suicide-bomber’s parents nor from any one of the TNA Members of Parliament who are although proxies of the LTTE, in name elected by the people.

I am not asking the TNA Members to sacrifice their own children. My only worry is as to why they can’t lodge a strong protest against human sacrifices by the LTTE. That is all I am asking. I strongly condemn the LTTE for playing with human lives."

He said that Ten innocent people some of whom are police officers, have died and over eighty-five seriously injured. How many more will die will not be known for a few days and by the time the exact figure is made known, more similar incidents would have taken place.

TNA withdraws from EP poll at Prabhakaran's instance

LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran has ordered Tiger proxy TNA not to contest the upcoming Provincial Council elections in the Eastern Province. He issued this order when TNA Parliamentarians were attending the funeral of slain colleague Sivanesan.

According to reports from the Wanni, LTTE political wing leader Nadesan had reiterated to the TNA MPs the LTTE unwavering commitment to a Tamil homeland in the North and East and that their objective will be achieved in the near future.

He had also ordered the TNA MPs to agitate diplomatic missions in Colombo and complain that the Government was violating human rights and also to speak against the ongoing conflict.

The fact that elections are to be held in a demerged East and its implication on the Tamil homeland concept encompassing the Eastern Province had also weighed heavily in the LTTE's decision to order the TNA out of the poll.

LTTE ready for talks if Lankan govt halts attacks

The Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka have expressed readiness to hold talks with the government in Colombo if it halted the military operations against them, but warned that the offer should not be seen as "any desperation" on their part to stop the war.

"The LTTE is prepared to commence negotiations with the Sri Lankan government if the government security forces are ordered to halt their military operations. It was the government which started the war," the LTTE political head P Nadesan told a group of Parliamentarians from the pro-rebel Tamil National Alliance (TNA) in Wanni recently.

"The offer of the LTTE for a ceasefire and talks should not be construed as any desperation on our (LTTE) part to stop the war. The ball is in the Sri Lankan government's court. It was they who started the armed attack," Nadesan was quoted as saying by Suresh Premachandran, a TNA MP from Jaffna District who was present at the meeting.

New LTTE TV channel in Italy banned

An illegal TV channel operated by the LTTE terrorists in Italy has been shut down by the Italian Police from last Thursday (March 13) onwards. The ‘Tamil V Channel- Euro Television’ was transmitting extremely bogus programmes portraying a one-sided view of the situation in Sri Lanka in favor of the banned terrorist outfit since the beginning of this month in Italy.

“Although the channel was said to be transmitting on a trial basis, it transmitted controversial terrorists’ propaganda material objectionable to the democratic world.

The test transmission of the EuroTelevision transmitted an old interview of the slain TNA Member of Parliament K.Sivanesan with the intention of blaming the Deep Penetrating Forces of the Sri Lanka Army for the killing that occurred 20 kilometers inside Vanni, an area presently controlled by the LTTE.

The interview presented government's complicity without a semblance of factual accuracy to prove it,” the Asiantribune website reported on Sunday (16).

Anandasangaree demands LTTE to take full responsibility for the killing of MP Sivanesan and his driver

In a strongly worded statement V.Anandasangaree, demanded the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam led by Velupillai Prabakaran to take complete responsibility for the killing of Kiddinan Sivanesan the Tamil Nation Alliance member of parliament of the Jaffna district and his driver Maheswararajah, in Vanni on 06 March.

While condemning the killing of Sivanesan and his driver Maheswararajah, Anandasangaree has posed pertinent question to the LTTE to response regarding these killings.

According to the statement of the TULF President, the said incident had taken place about 2 miles from Mankulam on the A9 road and about 190 miles from Colombo. Of these 190 miles he points out that about 170 miles fall within the Government controlled areas and therefore under the army’s control.

He said that no man with any sense will say that the penetrating unit went into the LTTE held areas to a distance of about 20 miles from the defense line to plant the claymore mine, when they had 170 miles of the highway under their command. Anandasangaree alleged that it was by such type of silly accusations that the LTTE and the TNA Members had lost their credibility.

He adds, “No one believes their stories because their political honesty is questionable.”

Prabhakaran 'hale and hearty', says Tamil MP

Tamil Tigers chief V Prabhakaran is "hale and hearty and ruling skillfully", a lawmaker of pro-LTTE party has said, rejecting claims that the elusive rebel leader was injured.

"Incorrect statements are being made saying Prabhakaran is injured in an air-attack," MP Selvarajah Gajendran of Tamil National Alliance (TNA), the LTTE proxies in parliament, said.

"He (Prabhakaran) is quite healthy and ruling skillfully," the lawmaker from strife-torn Jaffna told the House earlier this week while speaking on a motion to extend emergency in Sri Lanka by one month.

The Sri Lankan military had earlier claimed that Prabhakaran may have been injured in a November air raid. The military has intensified its offensive against the rebels after scrapping a tattered 2002 ceasefire in January.

TNA MP Sivanesan was summoned to Kilinochchi by LTTE for secret meeting

Tamil analysts in Sri Lanka believe that K. Sivanesan, Member of Parliament (MP) of the LTTE-backed Tamil National Alliance (TNA) was killed by the Tamil Tigers. The LTTE has summoned Mr Sivanesan and another TNA MP for a briefing on Wednesday. According to political circles only Mr Sivenesan was free to go to Mankulam.

The LTTE summons TNA MPs from time to time and instruct them on the stands they should take in Parliament debates and media interviews.
Mr Sivanesan who received the LTTE summons on Wednesday, 24 hours before his death on Thursday afternoon in a claymore explosion inside the LTTE controlled area.

Analysts say that the LTTE while claiming that the group has the total control of areas beyond Vavuniya issues a statement immediately after the killing that an Army Special Forces unit blew up Mr Sivenesan’s vehicle.

The LTTE has used claymore mines in Vavuniya to kill armymen and policemen recently. Mr Sivanesan was driving near his home in Mankulam in the LTTE controlled area in the north when the blast occurred, killing him and his driver. The explosion took place at a place between Oamanthai and Puliyangkulam on A 9 road, which is completely under the LTTE and is guarded by Tamil Tigers.

Within hours of the explosion the LTTE announced that it was by the Army deep penetration unit. Pro-LTTE website Tamilnet, quoting LTTE military spokesman Rasiah Ilanthiraiyan said "his vehicle was precisely targeted, because there were several vehicles travelling along this road. It's another example of how the regime in Colombo acts."

Tamil analysts ask the question whether the army units could operate freely during day time in LTTE controlled areas. “This is definitely an inside job by the LTTE,” an analyst concluded.

The military denied any hand in the attack. "We don't know what exactly happened because it has occurred in an uncontrolled area," said military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara. "There are no deep penetration units operating in that area. We totally deny it."

Mr Sivanesan had attended a meeting in parliament on Wednesday and he left for Mallakam after the session was over.

Sri Lankan legislator killed in explosion

A Tamil minority legislator from the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) was killed in an explosion in northern Sri Lanka Thursday afternoon, party and defense officials said.

K. Sivanesan and his driver were killed in a roadside bomb explosion around 1 p.m. local time (0730 GMT) at Kallarpuliyankulam area in the Tamil rebel held Wanni area, said TNA legislator Mavai Senathirajah.

Sivanesan, a native of the Vadamarachchi sector in the northern Jaffna peninsula, was elected to Sri Lanka's parliament from the TNA in the April 2004 parliamentary election.

TNA officials said he was traveling to Mallavi area in the Wanni district having left the capital Colombo at 4 a.m. local time (2230 GMT) Thursday.

JVP rejects solution based on Indian model

The JVP yesterday rejected APRC (All Party Representative Committee) call for a series of measures to achieve maximum and effective devolution of powers to the provinces in the short term.

JVP leader Somawansa Amarasinghe said that Minister Tissa Vitarana’s so called APRC was no APRC at all. How could they categorise it as an all party committee when the JVP and the UNP weren’t represented. The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) which recognised the LTTE as the sole representatives of the Tamil speaking people, too, boycotted the committee.

Addressing the press at Savsiripaya auditorium, Amarasinghe asserted that except the SLFP, other parties which endorsed the proposals were in fact no political parties. They were ‘three wheeler’ parties and their endorsement wouldn’t mean a thing, he said.

Government wins Budget 2008 by majority of 47

The budget vote which generated much tension finally turned out to be an anti-climax with the Government securing a comfortable majority of 47.

The voting commenced today around 5.00p.m by name for and against the budget. There were 114 votes for the Budget and 67 against it. The JVP abstained from voting.

The UNP (Democratic Group), Jathika Hela Urumaya, Upcountry People's Front, Mahajana Eksath Peramuna and the Ceylon Workers' Congress voted for the budget while the UNP (Ranil Group), Tamil National Alliance and the Western Province People's Front voted against it.

Earlier in the day, veteran politician Anura Bandaranaike crossed over to the opposition benches.

Subsequent to the vote, Minister D.M. Jayaratne said that the Government will defeat terrorism and develop the country:

"Today we have emerged victorious on the 2008 budget and we will not hesitate to defeat terrorism and to carry forward our development programme," Mr.Jayarathne told www.news.lk.

Although SLMC’s Rauff Hakeem stirred up controversy with his crossover on Wednesday, with the UNP claiming that others in the Government will break ranks at today's vote, the Government mustered a comfortable 114 votes, sufficient to secure a majority even if the JVP had voted against the budget.

Wijedasa Rajapaksa, who crossed over to the opposition but abstained from voting at the second reading, opted to do the same today as well.

Wimal Weerawansa, Propaganda Secretary of the JVP, addressing parliament said that his party was not ready to be anyone's catspaw and makes decisions in the best interest of the country and the people.

Sri Lanka gov't denies involvement in abductions

The Sri Lankan government on Wednesday denied any involvement in an alleged abduction of three people connected to Tamil minority legislators in the Eastern Province.

Chief Government Whip and Minister of Highways Jeyaraj Fernandopulle told parliament that it was unfair on the part of the opposition to accuse the government of being behind the abductions.

Suresh Premachandran, a legislator for the Tamil National Alliance (TNA), told parliament that three people closely related to three TNA legislators had been abducted by an armed group in the eastern Batticaloa district on Tuesday night.

The three legislators have been warned that they should not vote against the government of President Mahinda Rajapakse in Friday's third reading of the 2008 budget if they wanted to see those abducted return alive.

Premachandran and other opposition speakers urged Speaker W. J. M. Lokubandara to investigate into the incident.

Sri Lanka opposition targets to defeat the budget at third reading

Sri Lanka major opposition United National Party (UNP) sources say that the party will attempt to defeat the budget at the vote of the third reading which is scheduled to be held on December 14.

UNP MP Lakshman Kiriella issuing a statement accused the government of spending a massive amount of money and threatening some MPs to win the budget at the second reading.

The government won the budget with a majority of 16 votes yesterday. All the government coalition parties voted in support of the budget while UNP, People’s Liberation Front (JVP), Tamil National Alliance (TNA) and Western People’s Front (WPF) voted against it. MPs Wijedasa Rajapakse, Nandana Gunathilaka and two TNA MPs abstained from voting.

Sri Lanka Gov. Wins 2008 Budget by 16 Votes

Sri Lanka government has won the second reading of its 2008 budget today (19) evening, by 16 votes.

118 voted in favor while 102 opposed. JVP decided to vote against budget at the last moment. UNP and TNA also voted against the budget.

Former JVP MP Nandana Gunatillake, now acting as an independent MP, was abstained from voting. Wijedasa Rajapakse and two TNA members were also abstained from voting.

JVP MP, Anura Kumara said two hours earlier, that their decision will depend on the situation in parliament within following two hours. A political analysis told NIDAHASA News, that JVP might be decided to vote against the budget after clarifying that government could win without their support.
