Engineering Final student dies in the explosion

In the bomb explosion that occurred inside a Kottawa- Mt. Lavinia bus near Shailabimbarama Temple near Moratuwa University at about 7.35 a.m. today a final year student of Moratuwa University has died. The explosion killed 21 and injured more than 60.

The victim is Gamunu Ratnayake, a final year Engineering student.
Several more university students have been injured in the incident say reports reaching us. A curfew has been imposed in the area.

21 civilians killed, over 50 injured in cowardly terror attack- Moratuwa [02nd Lead]





LTTE terrorists have exploded a claymore bomb targeting a crowded public transport bus at Katubadda, Moratuwa this morning (June 6). According to the defence sources, the roadside bomb placed at a location between Shailabimbaramya Buddhist temple and the University of Moratuwa, the topmost Engineering University in Sri Lanka, has been exploded targeting a bus, bearing number 29-1885, that was traveling from Kottawa to Mount Lavinia (Route number 255).

The explosion took place between 7.45 a.m and 8.00 a.m, police sources said.

The hospital sources said, 21 people have been killed, 13 males and 8 females, and over 50 injured in this cowardly terror attack. The injured have been rushed to the Teaching Hospital Kalubowila and Base Hospital in Lunawa. Meanwhile, few victims who suffered severe injuries have already been transferred to the National hospital Colombo, Kalubowil hospital sources said.

LTTE is a ruthless terrorist organization fighting for a mono ethnic separate homeland for the Tamils in Sri Lanka since 1983. During 3 decades of its bloody terror war against Sri Lankan citizen it has killed tens and thousands of innocent civilians in village massacres, bus bombings, train bombings, suicide bombings, and etc.

Govt does not approve attack on undergrads - Jeyaraj

Chief Government Whip Minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle yesterday told Parliament that the Government does not approve the assault on university students who participated in a demonstration in Colombo on Monday.

The Minister responding to a statement by JVP MP Wimal Weerawansa said: "As Ministers we will never approve this incident which had taken place on International Human Rights Day. This is a move taken by police."

Following a request by the Minister, the JVP agreed to conduct a discussion on the Sabaragamuwa University issue at the Parliament complex last afternoon. Weerawansa making a special statement in Parliament said when International Human Rights Day was celebrated on December 10, police assaulted and arrested 10 university students participating in a demonstration in Colombo the same day.

The students had conducted this demonstration regarding a crisis in the Sabaragamuwa University.

Sri Lanka court orders halt to student demonstration

The Colombo Magistrate's Court Friday ordered the police to halt a demonstration by a group of university students in view of serious security situation in the capital Colombo, court officials said.

For the last 17 days, student activists of the Sabaragamuva University have been staging a protest demonstration opposite the Ministry of Higher Education in downtown Colombo.

The court ordered the police to compel the students to give up protest action in view of the threatening security situation in the capital in the aftermath of two bomb attacks blamed on Tamil Tiger rebels.

LTTE threatens new entrants to Universities

It is reported that the LTTE has threatened the families of undergraduates seeking admission to universities in the unredeemed areas in the Wanni to handover one member from their family to join the LTTE ranks if they were to be allowed to read for their Degrees.

This virtually amounts to conscription where members are forced to join the LTTE ranks. Some students from the above areas have reported to the Army post at Omanthai that unless a member of the family is sent to the LTTE cadres, they would not be permitted to pursue their studies at Universities.

About 12 students from Jaffna, Colombo and Ruhuna Universities have entered State controlled areas through Omanthai. It is also learnt that undergraduate of Wanni have been provided a basic combat training by the LTTE.

Jaffna University lecturer killed in LTTE claymore blast

A lady lecturer of the University of Jaffna and a Government Technical Officer were killed in a claymore mine explosion carried out by the LTTE this morning (25) in Jaffna.

Those killed were Sharadha Maransodhi (42) a senior lecturer of the University of Jaffna who died on the spot and Kandan Nishandan (25) a Technical Officer of the Uduvil AGA Office, who died on admission to the Base Hospital at Chankanai- Manippay, the Vaddukkoddai Police said.

The claymore mine attack took place at 8.05 am today at Sithankerni junction along the Manippay - Karainagar main road in Jaffna.
