Sri Lanka getting ready to hold local government elections in the newly liberated East

Sri Lanka Cabinet of Ministers today decided to nullify the previously called nominations for several local government bodies in the Eastern Province.

The decision coincided with the government’s expressed intention to hold democratic elections in the Eastern province after the whole terrain would be freed from the hold of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

Accordingly, the nominations received for the 2006 local government elections in one urban council and eight Pradeshiya Sabhas in the Eastern province will be nullified. Janaka Bandara Tennakoon, Minister of Local Government and Provincial Councils submitted the cabinet paper in this regard.
