Sri Lanka resettles 17,000 IDPs in East within a week

Sri Lankan government has resettled over 17,000 internally displaced people (IDP) in 18 Grama Sevaka divisions in Batticaloa, Media Centre for National Security said.

According to the authorities within one week 4,715 families comprising 17, 632 members were resettled in 18 Grama Sevaka Divisions of Porathivu in the Wellaveli area. The first phase of the resettlement began on May 14th.

The government had provided the basic needs of food and other essential items to the resettled people with the help of UNHCR. UNHCR, together with its partners, is looking at possible reintegration packages and is calling on the international community to help with assistance, Amin Awad, UNHCR's representative in Colombo, said.
